A pulling vehicle deserves more than a quick wash and a cover when the season ends. High-output engines, specialised tyres, hydraulic systems, exposed driveline parts and competition wiring can all suffer while the vehicle sits unused. A careful shutdown now reduces corrosion, seized components, flat batteries and unpleasant surprises when the next event approaches.
Indoor storage is a strong starting point, but a shed is not automatically a controlled environment. An open-sided farm shed near Wagga Wagga can collect dust and condensation, while a closed coastal garage in Queensland or New South Wales may hold salty, humid air. The right preparation combines cleaning, fluid management, pest control and regular checks suited to the building and the vehicle.
Begin with a written condition check before moving the pulling truck or tractor into storage. Record engine hours, oil pressure, coolant level, tyre condition, battery voltage and any leaks. Take photographs of hose routing, electrical connections and adjustment settings. These details are useful when a component needs to be refitted months later, especially after several busy competition weekends.
Walk around the vehicle with a torch and look for cracked belts, loose fasteners, damaged guards, worn rod ends and hydraulic seepage. Inspect the drawbar, hitch, wheel nuts and safety equipment as well as the engine bay. A minor issue that is easy to repair in autumn can become a seized or corroded problem by spring.
The building needs attention too. Choose a level surface with good drainage outside the doors and enough space to inspect the vehicle safely. Keep the machine away from fertiliser, pool chemicals, welding areas and stored hay. In rural Australia, red dust and grain residue can enter surprisingly small gaps, while coastal air can attack bare steel even inside a shed.
Use the event information available from the Great Lakes Truck and Tractor Pulling Association to keep track of likely return dates, technical requirements and competition timing. A storage plan works best when it is linked to the next inspection and preparation window rather than treated as an indefinite lay-up.
Wash the vehicle thoroughly, paying special attention to the underside, wheel wells, radiator fins and areas behind guards. Mud can retain moisture against powder coating and painted steel. Remove grass, clay and spilled fuel from the chassis, then dry the vehicle with compressed air or a clean blower. Avoid directing high-pressure water into wheel bearings, sealed electrical connectors or breather vents.
Clean the engine bay carefully instead of flooding it. Wipe oil and fuel residue from the block, manifolds and fittings, because grime can hide leaks and attract dust. Brush dirt out of hydraulic couplers and cap them once they are dry. Remove mud from the tyres and suspension so that cracks, cuts and loose components are visible.
Metal surfaces that are bare, chipped or lightly rusted should be treated before storage. Remove loose corrosion, apply a suitable primer and finish with paint where practical. A light corrosion-protection product can be used on unpainted steel, but keep oil and sprays away from brake friction surfaces, belts, clutches and tyres.
Moisture management matters during cool Australian winters. Temperature swings in a steel shed can produce condensation on the vehicle, even when the air feels dry. Leave ventilation paths open, use breathable covers rather than plastic tarpaulins directly against paintwork and consider a dehumidifier or moisture absorber in a sealed workshop.
Change the engine oil and filter before storage if the oil has seen a full competition season or contains fuel, water or combustion residue. Used oil may carry acids and contaminants that can attack internal surfaces while the engine is stationary. Run the engine only long enough to circulate fresh oil, then shut it down according to the manufacturer’s procedure.
Check coolant strength with a proper tester and inspect the radiator, hoses, cap and overflow bottle. Australian winter temperatures vary widely: Canberra and the Snowy Mountains can experience hard frosts, while much of northern Australia remains mild. Correct coolant concentration protects against freezing, corrosion and poor heat transfer when testing resumes.
Fuel storage depends on the engine and fuel type. For a conventional petrol engine, follow the fuel stabiliser manufacturer’s instructions and run treated fuel through the system. Do not assume E10 is suitable for every older tank, seal or carburettor. If the vehicle uses methanol, specialist race fuel or another oxygenated blend, consult the engine builder about draining the system, protecting the tank and handling vapours safely.
Diesel systems also need care. Fill or drain the tank according to the engine manufacturer’s advice, check for water in the separator and protect exposed breathers. Any fuel that is drained must go into an approved container and be stored or disposed of legally. Keep ignition sources away from fuel work, and never leave an open container inside a poorly ventilated shed.
Hydraulic oil and transmission fluid should be checked for water, discolouration, metal particles and unusual odour. Replace filters where the service interval requires it. If a hydraulic ram is exposed, clean and protect the polished rod with a compatible product, then retract it where the equipment manufacturer permits. Do not rely on a random aerosol that could damage seals.
Internal engine protection is especially important for vehicles that may sit for several months. After the oil change, follow the engine builder’s storage instructions for fogging oil or cylinder lubrication. Petrol engines may require plugs to be removed and cylinders treated individually, while high-compression or competition engines may have procedures that differ from ordinary road vehicles.
Never crank an engine with ignition, fuel or starting systems active unless the procedure is safe for that particular build. For some engines, turning the crankshaft by hand after lubrication is appropriate; for others, it can disturb timing or create a hazard. Document what was done, including plug torque, lead locations and any disconnected systems.
Protect air intakes, exhaust outlets and crankcase breathers from insects, rodents and moisture. Use clearly marked breathable plugs or covers that cannot be forgotten. Do not seal an exhaust with a material that could be sucked into the engine, and place a visible tag on the steering wheel or control panel stating that covers must be removed before starting.
Grease universal joints, kingpins, pivots, bearings and other service points with the specified lubricant. Move steering and suspension components through their safe range if the workshop manual allows it. Inspect driveshafts, belts and couplings for signs of misalignment or perished rubber. A competition vehicle can hide wear because it receives intense use in short bursts rather than steady road kilometres.
Relieve hydraulic pressure before storage and park implements or mechanisms in a supported, safe position. Never depend on hydraulic pressure to hold a raised component while people work nearby. Chock wheels, lower equipment to the ground where possible and follow the same isolation discipline used at an event or workshop.
Competition tyres should be cleaned, inspected and stored away from sunlight, ozone sources and solvents. Look for sidewall cracking, cuts, exposed cords and bead damage. If the vehicle will remain stationary for months, reduce load on the tyres with approved stands positioned at strong chassis points. Do not place stands under thin sheet metal, axles not designed for the load or hydraulic components.
Inflate tyres to the storage pressure recommended by the manufacturer, not automatically to the pressure used during a pull. Mark any unusual pressure or wheel position in the service notes. For a vehicle that stays on its tyres, move it a short distance periodically only if doing so is safe and practical; otherwise, use proper supports and inspect for flat spotting before the next event.
Clean brake components and remove mud from callipers, drums and backing plates. Do not coat friction surfaces with oil. Check that handbrakes, linkages and park mechanisms are not left partially applied. Moisture trapped around brake parts can cause corrosion, while a stuck mechanism may prevent safe movement when the vehicle is taken out of storage.
Disconnect the battery using the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure, then clean terminals and inspect cables for chafing. A quality maintainer can preserve a battery when the workshop has safe, reliable power. Keep chargers away from fuel vapours and use a unit designed for the battery chemistry. If removing the battery, store it in a cool, dry location and record its condition.
Rodents are a practical issue in Australian sheds, from suburban garages to outback machinery buildings. Check for nests in air boxes, wiring looms and upholstery. Use traps or approved control methods around the building, but avoid loose poison where it could endanger children, pets or working animals. Rodent deterrent tape and regular inspections are safer than assuming a sealed bonnet will solve the problem.
A checklist prevents small tasks from disappearing when the season finishes in a rush. Give the sheet a date, vehicle identification and the name of the person who completed each item. Store a copy in the workshop and another with the vehicle’s setup notes.

The cover should be breathable, well fitted and clean on the inside. Do not wrap a damp vehicle in plastic, and do not let a loose cover rub against sharp guards in the wind. Leave access to essential inspection points where possible, while keeping the vehicle protected from dust and accidental knocks.

If the storage building has a history of dampness, inspect more often after major rain or large temperature changes. A hygrometer can show whether humidity is routinely high, and a simple log can reveal seasonal patterns that are easy to miss during a busy pulling calendar.
Taking a stored vehicle back to work should be treated as a recommissioning job, not a single start-up. Remove every intake, exhaust and breather cover, reconnect the battery correctly and inspect the engine bay for nests or chewed wiring. Check fluid levels, belt tension, tyre pressure, wheel nuts and all safety guards before energising electrical systems.
Prime lubrication systems and fuel systems according to the engine builder’s instructions. Turn the engine over safely before starting if the design and procedure allow it. Watch for oil pressure, coolant circulation, abnormal noises, fuel leaks and hydraulic movement. Keep the first run brief and controlled, then inspect the vehicle again once it has cooled.
Test brakes, steering, clutch, transmission controls and emergency shut-offs at low speed in a clear area. Confirm that the vehicle’s safety equipment, fire extinguisher, kill switch and protective shields remain current and properly mounted. Competition rules and scrutineering expectations can change, so review current association notices before travelling to an event.
If you are returning after a long lay-up, allow time for replacement parts and specialist work. Networking with other competitors can help locate an engine builder, machinist, tyre supplier or experienced fabricator, and this networking advice is useful when planning support before the busy season. Avoid leaving recommissioning until the week before a pull in regional New South Wales, Victoria or South Australia, when transport and workshop availability may be limited.

A proper winter lay-up protects both the machine and the time invested in building it. Clean it while every component is visible, service it before contamination sits in the systems, and leave clear records for the person who will prepare it next.
